I am well aware that DotA is played best with stacks of 5, because naturally that provides better teamplay. However, DotA will die if we focus on 5 player teams, rather than pub play. I'm sorry but that is the truth. The main playerbase of DotA2 and every game in existence, is the players who play a few times a week either solo or with a friend or two. The smallest amount of players are actually stacking five.
Yes - Ranked Matchmaking 5v5 Captains Mode would be absolutely perfect and I would play the hell out of it. However, if you don't allow solo queuers or 2, 3 or 4 queuers, the queues will be 15min + (and trust me, you won't get much higher quality games because of that, most likely worse).
I realize that the bulk of players play a few games and not as 5. However these are not the "paying customers" of Dota 2. The only people who care enough about Dota 2 to actually spend money are those who play regularly, who have friends who will see those items they got, who have friends who will want to discuss that pro-game they saw. This sea of occasional dota players are the pool from which additional serious players will be recruited. Default private stats, pub matchmaking in any mode and with 1,2,3,4,5 ppl must also remain.
The que will be longer for ranked games. I agree. But those who want to play it will be willing to wait. Games are certain to be less fair. Good teams will start out winning the first 5, maybe 10 matches. Bad teams will get stomped at first. But serious players want that to happen. Non-ranked games will remain where everyone can play for fun and get close to 50% win.
And my topic in the Development forum was closed within hours...
Moderators say that there are already "Hundreds" of posts about it and for that reason it should not be discussed. They basically said "Valve is working on it so shut up." I really can't imagine how something that is so important to the Dota community that it has come up "Hundreds" of times should not be constantly and continually discussed. But I have no power to change it.
At least now I know that Valve is getting an earful. Maelk was concerned that they might not know how big a deal it was and I shared that concern since...over and year and its not done. I'm sure this would have a much bigger positive effect than say adding Grevils and take a lot less work.
I agree you with on the ranked system, but you will never get it your way. Sorry, but you are dead wrong. The people who play a little every week are exactly the people who pay for shit. Casual players keeps DotA2 alive, not the competitive scene, regardless of what you think.
Really? Do you know casual players who are paying for items and paying to watch tournaments? The casual players I know are people who would never watch a game of dota pro or otherwise much less pay for it, people who play dota only because its free and their friend wanted to play. The people I know actually buying things play hundreds of games, follow the pro scene, and are concerned about their stats even if they are not the most skilled.
We don't have this kind of data for Dota 2, but when I was playing dota 1 I spent a lot of time analyzing stats for dotacash. They had about 250,000 active accounts at one point but 75% of all games were played by a core of about 30,000. Most accounts played less then 10 games in a year. I just don't see how low involvement can possibly be connected to spending money. High involvement is where the money will be spent.
Also what do you mean that I will "never get my way"? Valve claims they are doing what I'm asking for they just are slow.

Last week on talkdota:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvn7ec_SsBI
Tobiwan, Syndern, Maelk and Puppey discussed the Dotabuff DBR vs Valve MMR situation
I think Maelk is right that there should be a ranked ladder where people could choose to play a ranked game or play the regular matchmaking that we have now for no points. All the pubs could play the regular games with optional stats (ie default private) and no one would care about the in-game "im better than you" conflicts. But competitive players can play the ranked games. Ranked games will have all stats public.
Syndern clearly explained how it can't work for all the possible combinations of 2,3,4,5 groups and all modes. No one says it but the fact is simple. The ranked pub games have to be 5 v 5 games only and only captains mode. Each group of 5 could have its own ranking. That's all the more complicated it can get and still work.
But I am sure that this sort of system will provide what the competitive public players are looking for. This will also be a huge encouragement for teams of 5 to form and for people to bring their friends into playing dota. I think setting up such a system should be a high priority for Valve because
the way to make dota something many people do with friends, people involved enough to want to buy items to show-off, to want to pay to see tournement games...there has to be much more focus on 5 v 5 games. Dota does not have a long term future as a game solo people play on their own a few times a month. It needs to be a community activity and that means 5 player teams.
