If you ult the right person he's really good in a team fight, but if the other team has a lot of right clickers or you can't get the dooms off I think he's kind of bad. Doesn't get really strong unless he has a ton of items, hellfire is a long cooldown, he's very dependent on auto attacks. I like him as an off carry/initiator but most people try to jungle farm him and turn him into a hard carry and it only works if your team is already ahead. You can't deny jungle benefits in public matches though- assuming the solo lane doesn't feed that extra xp is really valuable because most pubs do not harass or ward jungle at all.
Yeah I hope that he starts getting picked up more and more, because like you said he is so versatile and the jungle creeps he can devour give him super powerful abilities. Purge is just so good I feel and critical strike and bonus dmg is excellent as well. Maybe teams will start selecting him to counter annoying split pushing hero's like weaver or prophet. Hopefully teams will start picking and banning this hero more often.

However he is still not having much of an effect even with an ultimate that virtually makes any hero useless. Is it because they build mek and other tanky items on him instead of intiation items like blink and shadow blade? Or becuase they try to make him into a fully fledged carry?
When I first started playing Doom I always started off with RoB and farmed the jungle until I had HoM, then I would get Necro book and start trying to get solo kills on the enemy carry. If successful I would then build into full carry items like assault and heart. Using this strategy got me into very high matches, however it got less and less effective as Doom could be easily shut down by a roaming offlaner or mid.
So I started now just rushing bottle, eating an Ursa or purge creep and trying to gank earlier on, it sort of works. (Better than a jungle axe anyway).
Anyway how you play Doom? Do you think he is a useless hero? And what way should he be played in competitive matches?
Posting this because finally teams are starting to see what a Doom is capable off, but like Naga siren had been previously using the hero in the incorrect way.
