Is it just a feeling or are pub games seldomly balanced? in General Discussion

Dotabuff added a graph to the matches page, a nice extra, thank you folks!

In the games I played, I notice that the graphs are seldom balanced. You would think that when picking a game, you are matched up with people that are in general of equal levels. I would think that this would result in the balance going up and down the X-axis of the chart.

But I got the feeling this almost never happens. Often the graphs are completely on one side of the X-axis, showing a clear dominance from the start up for one side.

Is this just my feeling? Or is this really a trend? Some games I feel like we are completely dominating, others we are completely crushed.

And if so, does this mean that the matchmaking in pubs are somewhat broken?

I would love to hear some real statistics on that instead of just having this as my gut feeling.

According to members of DK "dota is a game of momentum"
thats why with few exceptions, doing well early(lvl 1 rs = 90% win rate) secures the win

Its the same in pubs as in competitions
the graph is always skewered towards one direction - because they are gay..i mean its all momentum
killing the same hero keeps getting easier if he has gotten any real farm

        its not even about matchmaking

most competitive games are as one sided as pubs, very rarely do you see one team consistently dominate others (and those are one-sided matches too)

statistically speaking it's less obvious from competitive games because of the ability to forfeit, but I highly doubt pubs are any more one-sided than competitive games

Thanks for the responses! I hope one day the dotabuff stats magicians can shed some solid insight on their blog. Because until the facts are calculated and despite the fact that winning the early moments in matches, it is still a gut feeling.

          ;-)

          Thanks and cheers!

It's not that one team is always way better than the other. It is about momentum, as Hearts said. Early kills cost the losers gold and exp, and reward the winners with gold and exp.

In the trench where I play, most players who feed early just return to the lane and feed again even faster. The winners snowball out of control. In most games the winner is determined in the first ten minutes. Sometimes the winners fail to push and drag out the game, allowing the underdog to get enough farm to come back, but it is rare.

At higher levels of play games seem to be closer a lot more often. I have spectated games where a team went 0-6 early and still won.

It's just the way dota is, a small advantage the leads to a kill or gold advantage leads to an even bigger advantage later. It's hard to come back from an exp/gold disadvantage.
