Always carry a tp/travel boots, and when you're position 1, don't farm on only 1 lane(switch between the lanes, go jungle,etc). TP as soon as the teamfight starts.
You got to learn how to move efficiently over the map, finding as much free farm as you can. It's on the team to create space for you and on you, to find as much farm as you can, so you can buy your core items quick and join fights asap. Also VERY important thing by playing a carry is your last hitting ability. If you cant get like 60 or 70% of available lh, then go practice hard or consider another role.

^all in the title. if I play carry and I get like a 5cs/min score I usually need to ignore my team to achieve it
