First game starts at 3500 I think. Also my summary on it, is that there is a lot of battle bonuses going around so it's smurf prime time.

is there any proof of what mmr people start calibrating at?

When i started playing (year and a half ago) you started account as "a begginner", "i've played dota before" and "i'm experienced player" meaning 1k, 2k and 3k in (hidden) mmr. I think everyone starts now at 3k, it read it somewhere if i remember correctly.
