It's only good if you drop acid.

But no, whether the show's intentionally stupid or not, the thing is, the whole "wisdom" of it is retarded, and it really does at least pretend to try to be smart, even though its own creator admitted that a lot of it is nonsense and created by his clinically depressed state. Also there's exactly zero character development whatsoever, Shinji is probably the single shittiest anime protagonist of all time, and just the kind of a kid that deserves to be repeatedly punched.

I like some anime (FMA). Emphasis on some.

But there's no reason to start changing display pictures now. Anime display pictures just never appealed to me in the slightest

      scraps

my favorite cartoon of all time is actually "Nausicca of the valley of the wind"

holy shit I agree with sven guy. That's my favorite of the Ghibli movies. The only animated movie I like more is The Iron Giant. also steins;gate is on my short list ...

also if you think all anime is for children ... watch Grave of the Fireflies. It's like the anime equivalent of Schindler's List. It's about the aftermath of the fire bombing of Kobe in WWII. It's absolutely amazing, but it's very sad.

Serial Experiments: Lain is really good. That's been mentioned a few times in this thread. ABe's other show, Haibane Renmei, is probably my favorite anime, but ... it's really, really slow. It's like a lullaby. Definitely not for everyone.

most of these shows take a little bit of time before they get interesting

yeah, a lot of anime takes a while to get going. It drives me nuts when they do this thing where you have a character say something like:

"so why did [major plot point]"

        and another character just responds:

        "that's ..."

and then it pauses for like a minute and a half, and then the scene ends. It's so infuriating. It's like the writers are going "nya nya, I know something you don't know", teasing you with absolutely no grace. It's not cool. It's not an interesting and intriguing hint. It's not mysterious. It's obnoxious and tasteless.

the only good thing about Attack on Titan is that the protagonists have spiderman-like powers. It's fun to watch and it opens really strong, but it can't keep it up. It's not even a full arc, it's just a bunch of superhero vs giant bullcrap with no consistent pacing. "welp, we've got enough episodes to make a season of television, ship it". The end of season one is ridiculously unsatisfying. It just stops half-way, with so much shit unresolved. The whole thing with Eren's basement is a gigantic FUCK YOUJ to the audience. I can remember three characters:
        - Eren. he's a berserker trope that cries a lot. a carbon copy of Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed.
        - Mikasa. She wears a scarf and doesn't talk and there's a wincest vibe between her and Eren. She's good at the fighting but has no personality.
        - Levi. He doesn't really talk and he's good at the fighting. He's basically just an older version of a male Mikasa, whose purpose is apparently to die selflessly so that Mikasa can take his place as the leader of whatever their squadron is called.

none of these characters are interesting. They're all one-dimensional.

I watched the first few episodes of Evangelion and got bored. Trigun is bullshit. Cowboy Bebop was my favorite anime as a teenager but I tried watching it again recently and found it pretty boring. Turns out your tastes change when you get older. But even when I was 16 I thought Trigun was bullshit. Fullmetal Alchemist is amazing. Brotherhood has a more coherent plot and ends much stronger, but the character development of the first series is better. You can't deny that the bottle episode where Havoc gets set up with Armstrong's sister, with the B plot of Mustang's men trying to solve a mystery, is absolutely hilarious. Episode 37, "The Flame Alchemist, The Bachelor Lieutenant & The Mystery of Warehouse 13"? That's just great television.

also this short, Cat Soup, is amazing:

mods are secretly (not really) weebs too.

I'm not sure but I think I'm the only one that's ever really watched anime. I don't really watch it any more though, not enough time.

SAO LN's were terrible, the anime was too. If you wanna read a good LN go read HakoMari. Shit's got an amazing story, sadly it makes 99% of anime look like shit afterwards(and well, it is).

oh also, The Secret of Kells is absolutely amazing. It's French-Belgian-Irish, but it's stylistically closer to Tezuka than Disney.

I haven't watched SEL mostly because I've watched Texhnolyze and that shit bored me. As an anime, it's different and I get that, it was really hard for me to understand what was going on though. As good as it actually was, it was just so boring, so I haven't given Serial Experiments Lain a chance yet.

^I like how NGE and EOE are in different categories, that's some good shit. I sometimes feel tempted to get some acid and watch end of evangelion again.

BTW just to repeat that attack on titan is shit, but this is somewhat awesome if you like music like that:

I've never watched any of the Evangelion movies or EOE. Just the original NGE.

AoT isn't my favorite. Code geass is. Watch that and see if it's also Psuedo-intellectual crap. Could be, guess I never saw it that way. Aside from the shitty chess matches.

I definitely did not expect to get up to level 5.

grave of the fireflies is a bit, well, too dark. as if the director was aiming to make the story as fucked up and sad as possible. its still good tho.
also nausicca ~ mononoke, but monoke looks a bit better in terms of how it is drawn

                                  Riguma Borusu

@TS-: I do agree that Mononoke is better drawn and I think I'd agree with color choices more there too but Nausicaa simply has that really weird yet very effective steampunk fairytale feel to it, it's also magical, I fall in love with the "requiem" theme every time I watch it.

@Austin: NGE is generally shit, but maybe you shuold watch EOE, it complements the original TV season very well, it's really weird and it'll touch you in a weird way though it's still kinda stupid and cringe-inducing in various ways. Also Code Geass is on my queue too, so I'm gonna give it a try pretty soon too. I've only recently started mass watching anime though I've already developed a taste and there seem to be a lot of things I dislike about animes in general.

I also love how Scraps' description of Mikasa is pretty much "she wears a scarf" because that's... well, pretty much it.

                                    Also:

Being a musician and very into various soundtracks, I must say I kinda dislike most kpop soundtracks save for a few, which is why I am very happy to hear actual quality compositions like those found in miyazaki's films.

                                      it's almost as if it's a real movie ;)

Schindler's List, Big Fish, Requiem For a Dream, American Beauty, Saving Private Ryan, ... there's basically a movie nominated for Best Picture every single year that's just as somber. It's particularly jarring in Grave of the Fireflies because, well, you go into a movie like Schindler's List or Requiem for a Dream expecting something absolutely gut-wrenching, but you sit down to watch an anime and it makes you lower your guard. It's basically anime's only piece of Oscar bait.

But yeah ... I definitely agree that it's really sad; I wouldn't recommend it for people that don't like sad movies.

I'll give it a shot sometime. I'm watching a few other anime at the moment, one is Shimoneta. This anime is lacking so much polish, the art is bad, the style is bad, the protagonist is another Shinji Ikari, although he's showing some promise to having real development. Kajou-Sama seems pretty cool though. The only thing this anime has is the dirty humor and maybe a slightly ok story, but I doubt it. Still gonna finish it.

I know stuff up to level 4, heard about some of the stuff up to level 6 but I have actually never heard of some of the titles in friggin level 1. What does that mean?

On what levels are "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" and "Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl"? I think, both are pretty fucked-up, but in different ways.

                                              TripleSteal-

huh, none of these films are any close to grave of the fireflies in how dark/depressing they are. ryan is only partly a dark film, shindler's list is an inspirational one (would be a 10/10 wihtout the scene in the end when hes crying and talking about his watch, it was a bit false and too pathetic), requiem is a tragedic melodrama generally in light colors, etc.
grave of the fireflies is more like kosinski's Painted Bird, imo, the only light present there only exists and contrast the darkness and make it even more depressing.
