ganking one is high risk high reward
u might get more than u would as afk but afk carry is safer in terms of farm
look at your 5 heroes. look at their 5 heroes.
decide who wins late. if thats you then farm. if them then gank.
The same way as pro in sc2 choose between cheese or macro.
If you are better than opponent you go macro (farm)
If you are weaker than opponent, you go cheese (gank).
Ofc there's some kind of balance to have between those too, and more than just the skill of people involved, you have to check picks to see the gameplan, as even if you are better, some picks are just way too good in macro game for you to accept to actually macro versus them.
But more importantly, you have to vary a bit, cause nothing worst than having your enemy know that you'll cheese your way
(last ti, cdec, so basically the plan of eg to defeat them was, 1 mid, 4 hidden behind the t1, with eventually a gyro farming 1 pack of ancient / min but nothing else -which is obviously fucking bad if cdec changed their plan-)
And even worst, having your enemy know that you'll try to macro as hard as possible to compensate the gap between individual skill lvl, which mean they know you will not punish their dive. (basically last ti, secret was the macroest team, and they definitly overmacroed, they would have won so easily otherwise)
Never just afk farm or just gank as a carry
If youre going farm oriented (i like this one :P) split push, hit towers, trade. never farm jungle while your team is fighting.
If youre going gank path farm jungle (they will fear and youre not losing time), take enemy jungle and take objectives as team after ganks.
Here is a scenario :
U are farming a lane , u see a hero , u know that that hero is worth 300 . He is in river near mid full hp , u gotta walk( waste 30 sec / 1 wave 40x4 = 160 - 300 = 140 ) or tp ( 75 - 300 = 225 )
And you probably predicted u can kill him within 15 sec which translates to another creepwave which is worth 160 . U wasted like 320 gold for a risky 300 - the creeps u missed or gold for tp and for experience
Not to mention you might get killed by them im the process or he might have survived . Unless you got double kill or somethimg then your gank was a good call
Depend on your hero.
If your a Alchemist/Spec/AM/PL/Sven focus on farming first. Unless your opponent tower dive your teammate, thats the cue to tp back up them. But do not roam looking for gank unless your team comes up with a plan. These hero is more effective later on if they have their core items: Radiance, Dagger, BF, Diffusal.
If youre a hero with a effective early skill set like CK, Juggernaut, or Ursa then go for gank to help your team. They get scared if one of those heroes is missing from map. Ursa can solo kill a single support in about 2 secs if he is lvl 10 (1-4-4-1).
The team with the best picking of heroes usually wins imo
afk farming doesn't mean you ignore your team completely
i dont know how many games i've lost cuz the carry thought it was absolutely okay to never appear as the enemies took tower after tower.
Ya those who ignore their team are bad for focusing on farming too much .
I think when you help u should consider the following
1. U can kill the hero fast
2. U have someone to help you ( depends on the situation but most of the time u need help )
3. The victim must be near you ( you should be in the action within 15 sec )
4. You have means of escape ( to ensure you dont die in action , can be via teammates securing you )
5. The kill must be worth more than the farm you will sacrifice

As the title says. Im focusing on carrying, i am the afk carry :) i usually prioritize farming than kill, unless i know i can kill him without sacrificing too much farm.
The ganking carry is good too. Helps the team in early to mid , but the downside is ur sacrificing farm to help your team which can be done by the mid and offlane
