Nobody starts plays Dota with the intention of earning money from it, not even the people who earn money from doing it.
Agree with op. BUT, competition is exciting, and if you're half way decent the fact that there are open qualifiers means ANYONE has a chance to make it to these major prize pool tournaments. The thought in itself is part of what makes dota unique. Nobody should ever bank on going pro with dota. However, if I was 5k+ even I don't see why not participate in the open qualifiers for the fun and thrill. Once again. Dropping everything to try and go pro is a foolish idea though.
the rider, dota is a 5vs 5 players game. you can't win the game alone even if you are a master.
my point is don't drop your studies to do full time gaming. definitely it's a difficult path. the chance of hitting high and earn money is as slim as hitting jackpot.
Rather than that, why not just quit this boring, disgust filled game for your nerves? Every time I click 'Find Match' I wind up feeling physically ill from the sheer revulsion. Is ranked really that much better?

@not arin, the point of this thread is not asking you to quit gaming. gaming is good to give you some form of excitement and relaxation after a long day of studies or work, in very very minority of the player population it turn out to be a career that earn them good money but the minority is really small and with game changing rapidly in each patch, the winner pattern will shift also. hence, to play dota as career is a very difficult path.

Lol. Frank boosted 4 accounts playing riki dumdum. 4 accounts went to 6K. While you, with a thousand matches on riki remains 4K. You can't say that 73% of the time frank has good teammates.

secondly, i had 2650 games as riki excluding dota1.
thirdly, 73% winning rate is meaningless, it only showed 73% of the time you play against a team which doesn't have that to win or play with a team that can win game. it's a 5vs 5 game, regardless. go look at miracle invo winning rate. he has 59% winning rate as invo, you mean he is worse player than those with higher winning rate than 59%?
that's why i said, go study, knowledge empower you. not dota.
@no money. i'm presenting a fact, some figure to show players who dream to be pro player one day. being a pro player and making a decent living by winning game is two different things. many pro players played for years and didn't win anything. go check liquipedia and check on this former pro members, any team, check how much earning they make by playing dota. some make good living even without winning games like singsing is another story.

im pretty sure in the us going to vocational school and becoming a welder or something will earn you more money for less effort and 0 risk than going pro, and ur family will not think ur a loser
I am agree with op, also there's nobody who plays e-sports after 30. or make a living at that age, Neo from cs go is barely 30, and its about to retirement.

how many dota players on earth are making money? let say we have 5 millions player, only the top 50 are making money. so don't waste your time, go do something else more useful than playing game.
