Some heroes dont have flashfarm, but are very good late, like silencer, thus it brings late to you earlier
You spend 1650 gold on it. Midas cooldown is 100. Every 100 seconds you get 200 gold from it. Just to pay back the investment cost, you have to use it 9 times. That will take 800 seconds. That is 13 minutes. Since you probably won't be using it right on the instant it comes off cd, and you might die a few times thus messing up your timing by a bit, let's make that a safe 15 minutes.
So 15 minutes of using midas will only pay back its cost.
So if u get midas at 10 min, only after 25 min of game will you start getting extra gold from it. And what's the extra gold? A measly 200 every 100 seconds.
Nah, I don't think midas is that good for money. It was great for exp, but with the nerf now I'm not too sure about that anymore
>main purpose of the item: getting levels faster
Many would disagree and go on a long rant, even in 5k+ bracket.
Whether Midas is primarily a XPM or a GPM item is a matter of player's perspective, as well, as viability of the item as a relatively late purchase.
Don't forget that Midas also gives attack speed and synergizes w/early CD reduction talents, hence why it pays itself back faster, than it may seem on certain heroes.
200 gold in 100sec may not seem to be much, but in reality that's +120 GPM talent packed in the item.
@One Step Ahead You are right. My statement about the "main purpose of the item" is an opinion, not a fact.
However, the pay back cost calculation is before you. As you can see, it will take 13-15 min after which the item actually starts paying dividends to you in terms of monetary benefits only.
Put it another way, assuming you get midas at minute 7 (a very good timing), more than half an hour of playing the game (at minute 35) you will have received a measly 1650 gold from the item (after subtracting pay back cost from total earnings from midas)
Again.
Depends on the hero and if the hero right-clicks, Midas also hastens the farm w/bonus attack speed by 1-3 mins, if the hero has CD reduction, it hastens even further, bonus EXP increases your level faster, thus you have higher DPS as a hero and again, farm faster, than you would've farmed.
Midas payback, thus, is a non-constant and not such an obvious timing as it may seem.
I'd only get that item on abaddon to go with his bonus xp talent.
Or if against a techies.
If I play Brood with or against Techies + both picks are passive, I usually get Midas+CDR+XP talent and get around +150 to +200 free GPM as a result and 25 mins level 25.
Seven-slotted by 30-35 mins. Put BoTs in the backpack and 6 full slots.
A situational item, but the situation is good for it, it really pays off.
I find building ocatrine core after Midas really helps. Look at my last game. I was using Midas left and right.
Build it on seeker because spells make the hero powerful and no 2k item is going to change your game.
midas is for heroes who want to fight but need farm
heroes like visage, viper, bs, dont need much items and want to be active, yet still need farm, so they can use midas to keep up while fighting
also the amt of gold midas gives is rlly 200 - (gold bounty of creep), so those like invoker who want midas for levels use it on big creeps, but say an arc warden wud use midas on small creeps for more gold.
you also sell midas back at what, 35 mins or so to 6 slot? So you recoup a lot of the gold.
That's all fine the issue really is opportunity cost. If a 2k gold item gets you more ahead you miss that timing. Like on troll warlord it'd be terrible cus he doesn't need the attack speed and getting a 2k yasha makes him insanely fast and ready to fight or farm, or half a bkb makes him almost ready to fight magic dmg.

7.06
Increased recipe cost from 1550 to 1650 (total cost from 2050 to 2150).
Transmute
Increased experience from 175% to 185%.
Reduced gold bonus from 220 to 200.
7.05
Transmute
Increased gold bonus from 190 to 220.
Reduced experience from 250% to 175%.
As you can see, the 7.05 change was a big nerfhammer to midas since it dampened the main purpose of the item: getting levels faster. This was changed in 7.06, but still, 185% compared to 250% is huge.
My question is why is the item still viable? The recipe cost is higher now and and it doesn't reward you with as much exp as before. Isn't it better to invest the 1650 in some other item, especially in pubs?
And I'm talking about traditional midas carries as well, like Invoker (and arguably enigma, ck, etc.).
